How to Pull Off an abrupt Character Name Change?

It's not really a full name change, it's just... well, here, let me explain it this way:

A woman is hiding from the law, so no one knows her real name. Up til then she's been called Kayla Harrison during the whole story. Then, someone guesses who she really is. Should I abruptly start to call her by her real name, or should I reveal who she actually is from the start of the story?

That's not quite my actual plot, but it's similar enough.

Thank you. :)How to Pull Off an abrupt Character Name Change? You would not want to reveal her actual name too soon so as to spoil the mystery of the story. If her hiding of herself behind an alias is essential to the plot, then only have her exposed when the person guesses who she is. Then you may call her by either name depending upon how the story unfolds after the revelation.

Thanks! I am planning on writing a book where the main character is hiding from convicts he testified against. I found this really useful!

Depending on the genre, I would think normally you wouldn't want the reader to know who she is if no one else does. You could either abruptly change her name or just keep on with Kayla after that.
