How do you legally change your name in the state of California?

When I was born, my name was misspelled and all through out my life (at school, doctors, etc.) my name had always been mispronounced and/or mistaken for a different name. I am currently 16 and my mom has agreed to legally change my name so that my name is correct. My question is How do my mom and I go about changing my name? How long does it take, etc? If it is any help, I reside in the state of California. Thank you.How do you legally change your name in the state of California? The clerk of your local municipal court has forms that you can fill out to petition that your name be changed.

Or you can go through an attorney (costs more) and have them file the petition for you.

Once the petition is filed, you get a hearing date, and the judge reviews your petition and grants your name change.

Then you take the final decree granting your name change to your school, the DMV, and other places where your name is on official documents, and have them change your name.
