I changed mine some time ago. You can legally call yourself what you like without changing it legally but if you do that you can't use it on official documents. Best to see a lawyer.

It depends on the state you live in. It will cost you time and money no matter what you do. A court order will make it easier.
You can file a lawsuit for a name change (costs a few hundred bucks). You do not need a lawyer.



A lawsuit gives you a court order. Take the order to the driver's license beureau and they have to obey the judge's order that changes your name, and give you a driver's license.



A new passport is much more difficult. A federal agency does not have to obey a state judge's order.



But really, you do not need to do anything for most purposes. Just start using the name you like - unless you have to show i.d, who will know?
