How long before your wedding should you register your name change?

I am getting married at the end of this month and would like my name to be changed as of the date of the wedding. How long before I can change my name on my checking account, bills, etc.? I guess I am asking how long it takes the Social Security Administration to officially issue the change? Has anyone gone through this recently? How long before your wedding should you register your name change? The only thing you can do is prepare. But you can't officially change your name until you have your legal marriage license.

I ordered this kit thing from the Knot (I think) that had all of the places that I would need to change my name, forms so I had them all filled out and ready to go and then just had to go to each place and/or mail them in after we got the marriage license back.

I can't remember how long it took the SSA, I don't rmember it being that long though.

You have to do it AFTER the wedding, because they need your notorized marriage license in order to change your name. Otherwise, your name would have to be changed by a court order, and that's not gonna be done by the end of this month.
You can't do it until after the wedding because in order to change your license you need your marriage certificate and without the license you can't get the social changed. Think about it. It would be awful dangerous to allow people to change their names before the wedding even took place for legal reasons. How are they to know if it ever does take place?
I had to wait until AFTER I was married because most places wanted proof (marriage license) that you have legally changed your name. That included the bank, Social Security and driver's license. Others you can just call a few days ahead to let them know your last name will be changed (credit cards, bills)
Depends. A lot of places require you to provide a copy of the marriage license. Check with them as you go. Checking account and bills should be the last after DR license and SS # and any other ID you use.
Yes, I got married in October last year. You will need copies of your marriage cert. You can take it to the bank and they will change it for you right away. The dept. of social security takes 24 hours. Its really easy and quick too. Congrats.
Until you have the certified copy of the marriage license (...which is NOT issued until AFTER the wedding), you do not have any legal grounds upon which to change your name on ANY legal documentation. You are your maiden name until you are officially married and the marriage license is recorded by your county clerk
You cannot change you name before you are married.

You are going to need to prove your new name....a certified copy of the marriage certificate.
Unfortunately that is all afterwards work, you have to present them w the paperwork at the S.S. office to show marriage. Try going to

Do it AFTER the wedding. What if something happens, and there is no wedding? The SS Admn and others don't have much problem doing things quickly, AFTER you've legally changed your name.
You can't - you have to wait til after, when you have the marriage certificate. It's no hassle, and doesn't take long for the changes to be made.
You can't change your name before the wedding. You'll have to travel on your honeymoon using your maiden name. You have to wait until you get your official marriage certificate back from the county.
You actually can't change your name until after the wedding. Once the minister signs the marriage license, it is sent to the county court for processing. It usually takes at most 3 weeks for everything to be completed. Once it is you'll have to go back to the courthouse and get copies, I would suggest 6-8, in order to complete all name changes. That means that when you book your honeymoon, make sure you keep it simple and keep your maiden name - since you won't be able to have anything changed over in time.
