It is more than a trip to the Social Security office if you want to legally change your name. The cost depends on what state reside in but in general it is about $200 for lawyer and court costs. You talk to the lawyer and he takes notes, they type it up, you go to court and the judge asks a few questions and if the judge agrees it is filed with the county clerk.
